Stolen domain name

Don't have a website, checked into it,some jerk registered nelemsmarine.com hoping to sell it to me.To much trouble to sue him. After 2 years I emailed him yesterday informing him I am the only person in the world with any interest in the name and offered to buy it if it was cheap, otherwwise he could keep paying every year. He told me he had $500 invested,I could have it for that. What has he invested? Maybe $30?

I'd say less than $100 for sure. How bad do you want it, and how will you profit by having it?

ForrestC 07-19-2002 12:07 PM

Magic, do something like put a hypen between nelems and marine which will make it nelems-marine.com and tell him to eat it. He will quit maintaining it sooner or later. Most likely he's someone in your town or someone who's delt with you.

Just thought that nelemsmarine.com is where most people would go first, that's what I always do when I'm looking for a website. .net is available as are several other variations. I think I'll tell him to forget it.Most people find my boats on boattrader.com anyway.

Magicfloat 07-19-2002 12:13 PM

Actually he is in Atlanta and registered most all Southeastern boat dealers with a .com. that had not done so themselves. Strange way to make a living. I'm going to tell him I'll pass.

Dear Robert:

US internet law is quite clear on this subject. This is not a direct quote: It is illegal for someone to either squat with the intention of sale or use a Dot Com address that is a registered trademark of someone else. Furthermore, it is also illegal to register that which is "assumed" like SeanConnery.com.

IE: The name "Superboat" IS A REGISTERED TRADEMARK OF SUPERBOAT POWERBOATS owned by John Coen - www.SuperboatPowerboats.com. If he wanted to make a stink, he could challange www.superboat.com which is Super Boat International. I know for a fact that the thought has not even entered his mind. I am just using this as an example.

However, if this person resides in a country where there is no reciprocity, they can do whatever the hell they want.

I tried to obtain Linssen.com for either www.LinssenUSA.com or the mother site www.LinssenYachts.com. That domain name is registered to someone in the Far East as I remember. They wanted $3,500 for the name, and there was nothing we could do about it.

If you would like for me to look into this further for you, just E me.

Best regards,
Jennifer

Looks like he has $100 invested not $500.

Give him $100 or tell him you'll find another way to accomplish the same thing without him.

Kohldog 07-19-2002 12:34 PM

Magic,

www.nelems.com was available so I just registered it. If you pay me $100 I'll transfer it to you.

Just Kidding!!!:D

It is available so if you want just the name go register it before someone else does!

There's no way this clown has $500 invested. If he's bulk registering domains he can get them for about $8 a year. He's trying to make a profit for all the others he has registered.

If you DO start a site, never let it lapse. The parasites look for lapsed names, put a porn site on it, then offter to sell the name back to you for really big bucks. Know of one offshore race team site that is now a "1-900-we will bill you a lot after we auto-dial your system into ours" site.
