Shore dreams for kids forms junior board of directors!
Shore Dreams For Kids (SDFK) recently celebrated it's 10 year anniversary at NJ Performance Power Boat Club's Winter Party that was held at Crystal Point Yacht Club in January. Over 120 members viewed a touching video produced by Tim Sharkey / www.sharkey-images.com that covered some highlights of the last 10 years. The video touched everyone there and reminded everyone how SDFK is such an unforgettable experience to those who attend as well as those who volunteer.
This year, the SDFK Board of Directors thought about the deep history of the event that we call SDFK today. It all started back in 1975 by offshore racers Bud Crisp and John Bochis. They started by taking 25 special needs children for boat rides in 1975 and then had a small barbeque in their backyard shortly afterward. That small event evolved into "Day on the Bay" and eventually ended in 2002 as the directors grew older and their life responsibilities changed. The following year SDFK was formed with the "blessings" of the Day on the Bay founders.
With the above in mind, we thought it was imperative to search and find the "next SDFK generation" so that hopefully 20 years from now the current SDFK Board members can look up SDFK on their smart phones while retired in Florida and still see SDFK going strong!
With that said, SDFK is very proud to announce the appointment of the following "twenty somethings" to the newly formed SDFK Junior Board:
A brief bio about each SDFK Junior Board member:
Gina Marie Marotta - Gina has been a volunteer for SDFK for over 5 years. She has always joined her dad NJPPC Member John Marotta (SDFK Board member since 2012) on this special day. She has volunteered in several places (food, escorting guests to and from the docks) and has shown a passion for SDFK like few others have. Gina also survived a horrible accident a few years ago that if it were not for god looking over her, she may have become a SDFK attendee instead of a volunteer.
Bernie Martins Jr - Bernie "aka Junior" has been a volunteer at SDFK since the inception 10 years ago. He always came to SDFK with his dad Bernie Sr. and what we have called the "Portuguese Possee." While most of the Martins family has worked the docks and the life jacket station, Bernie Jr has focused mostly on giving boat rides as well as loading and unloading participants into boats.
Alex Toto - Alex has also been a fixture at SDFK since the inception helping his dad Tom Toto load participants on and off of his dad's Outerlimits. Also in attendance with Alex over the years has been his cousin Chris who is a special needs young adult. Alex last year took the reins of the Grill operation at SDFK and ran it flawlessly with his young college buddies!
All of these young individuals have and share a passion for SDFK. They get what it is all about and have leaned that by being hands on volunteers at the event for so many years. These young folks will be groomed by the Senior SDKF Board Members for the next few years with the hope that they eventually will be part of the SDFK Senior Leadership in the future.
We are proud to have our Junior Board Members joining us at our 2nd Annual Shore Dreams For Kids this Friday night. Please help us congratulate them on their new responsibilities when you see then!
