I am looking at a boat this week that has an hp500 in it. Its an older carb model and am wondering how I can make sure its the real deal not just some paint on a motor.

Run the engine serial number through a Merc dealer.

On a tag near the starter. Also sometimes on the flame arrestor if it hasn't worn off.
