Something nobody seems to have mentioned is the fact that many "old" high performance boats really weren't as fast as we thought they were. The "dream-o-meter" speedometers of the day made many folks think they were really hauling the mail when in fact a GPS speedometer and / or radar showed them to be much slower.

just like anything cars, planes, motorcycles. As the years go by they get lighter, more hp engines, better designes etc. pretty simple. Overall the boat or even the performance boat has not changed all that much. Its small things which on drives and engines, some hull improvements etc. Personally Id almost rather buy something older and upgrade it, sad thing is stuff just isnt made like it used to be.

I bet it would be very very close to running with the TS boat. Most likely 2-3 mph in perfect conditions.
It's not just the steps, but they do have a fair bit to do with it. We have better hydrodynamics on drives now, and more efficient props. Lighter materials created through technology, and we can't forget computer modeling. We also can make more reliable power with less weight now. (headers vs. manifolds; lots of aluminum; many boats sans transmissions)

But back to back 37' Active Thunders built in 1999-ish time frame; straight bottom and step bottom...
...the step bottom was 13pct faster with identical builds and power.
