Sonny's personal ride has a similar set up, idles all day and even has air conditioning, so, if you happen to find yourself in Lynchburg at a red light next to a black (stock looking) 57 Chevy driven by an older guy with Gray hair, make sure it doesn't have a "Sonnys" sticker in the back window, lol
..........Unless your in a S2000 or Skyline (sorry, couldn't resist!) no offense intended

I hear ya, I am old enough to remember when a 500 inch motor was considered HUGE, and 10 second cars where hauled around on trailers, not driven to work 5 days a week (-:
Those valve covers are about 2 feet wide, hard to get perspective from looking at a pic, but, the top plate where the throttle bodies sit is about the size of a coffee table and I could BARELY get both my hands to wrap around the intake runners, the thing is just plain MASSIVE!
Wonder what kind of power it would make with a whipple charger and an inter cooler? STILL running pump gas, plus the sound of that thing AND a couple of Whipples screaming across the water!!

The engine management software is the key to fine tuning these monsters. Truly at this point the limit is fuel quality...the mapping software tells you real quick where octane limits timing advance/power. Tommy's software has a unique sensor that isn't only a knock sensor but measures the best audible qualities of the actual combustion explosion and adjusts fuel/air/ignition to duplicate the optimum "audible" characteristics of each combustion cycle. What's even more mind boggling is that he can sit at his desk and measure/change these characteristics in a clients engine remotely...anywhere!!!
I wouldn't have believed it if I had not seen it....the paradigm shift in the technology of these engine management systems is mind boggling!!
Think about it...we're having a discussion about marine engines producing 1500-1700 reliable HP on readily available pump grade gasoline!!! Unbelievable.

Yes my power is turbo and makes top power at 7800-8200
You need to go back in time and look at the 355 cid small block Chevy power from the S-10 drag truck days making 1000 hp that's crazy even on race fuel

Tommy at Chief has the high score as far as I know.
My 598's have made 1288 hp on 93 with 7 psi and 1160 degree egts....I'm building the latest shot at 1400+ 93 oct carb 598 right now my fingers are crossed

Cigarette (Craig Barrie) had on display a 38' boat with a set of SAR (Sonny's Automotive Racing) monster motors back in the early 1990's at the NYC boat show. Since then I have been following SAR and the products they build, I was impressed in the 1990's and to this day with SAR motors, and my lottery dream is a set of SAR monster cube motors (maybe the 1000 cu.in.Godfather) in a 40+/- ft. catamaran (Skater). I would have SAR build them, then Pat Musi http://www.patmusi.com/ (used to be from New Jersey who I have never met but have read about) fine tune and maintain it for me, the lottery dream will continue....I like this thread.
I am realistic enough to realize the the life span between rebuilds and the lack of (if any) off the shelf parts makes it a very expensive motor to own and maintain, but I do like dreaming...To have a large cubic inch SAR in a pleasure boat has been on mind now for about twenty years since Craig Barrie planted that seed...no cost in dreaming
The 1000 cu.in. motor aptly named "The Godfather" is pictured below on the left....nice huh... and below a picture of the motor this thread is all about, the 880 cu.in. 1500hp motor pictured on the right; I was bored late at night, so I had to add another picture (of the 1500 hp)....or for the forced induction (blown) crowd how about his 711 cu.in./1650 hp motor on 91 octane pictured below the 1000 cu.in motor.

I remember that boat in the link you posted. The spider web is a graphic that you don't forget. Craig was building some neat stuff back then, and he was always a pleasure to talk to at the NYC boat show. Good post.

Yeah, I remember looking into that engine room and seeing those 1000 Hawks, twin dominators atop a Hogan sheet metal tunnel ram. Now these new engines from Sonny! I can't stop looking at those Hemi Heads....Geezus!
