Look on the NAMS and SAMS websites. I doubt there is anything closer than KC though.

Yikes! That is out in BFE. Not sure where you plan to fly into at a reasonable cost unless you have your own plane.
There is not a significant body of water for 100 miles. I would not buy a boat without a lake test, too much does not show up on a hose.
Transport should not be as bad if you can find someone with an empty hitch headed back since it is close to I-70.
Your location is not specified.

You are not specific on a boat either but an 88' single engine, I would assume is not particularly high dollar so travel and transport will play a greater role.
IF you are going to lake test, you have to go south or wait til Mid March likely.
Wilson is the closest body of water with any size of marina that might have a regular mechanic.

I would get as comfortable as you can with what you can see. If its good, know you may give up a little if it is a rock bottom price but arrange for him to travel and meet you near a bigger city. You will still probably save vs the airfare and rental car expense.
What I have done is drive in to meet half way. Arrange for a good mechanic to meet in a larger city.
You both have a vested interest in making the deal happen and go home satisfied.
