Default Throttle / shifter install question

I've always assumed that throttles like what is pictured in the link can be installed with the levers canted forward or aft. It would be a personal preference. Is that true?

The two boats I've owned with these shifters have been canted aft. I heard somebody say that it is not the right way to rig these throttles and is a safety issue. Of course they couldn't say why.

My boats have all been canted forward. I can't see where it would affect operation either way. Seems like I see more canted forward than I do back.

Thanks. I figure the angle of the surface that they are mounted would have a lot to do with how they are mounted..
