I priced the 525 blue motor @ 20K so times two, new motors and drives I'm looking at around 72K plus sales tax.

Pricing a tired boat with 2 496's and XR drives @ around 50K, I could run them for a season perhaps and do a rebuild project and end up with a bullet proof set up for around 122K plus mechanic expenses. More than likely I would recoup a little money selling the old stuff and 130K would be a realistic budget?

IMCO. Although XR's are pretty stout if you treat them well...

X Power Drives, an alternative, not a cheap alternative, but an alternative none the less. The IMCO suggestion is far less expensive, and may be the best suited for your application. But these X Power Drives are the real deal based on the feed back I have reading, I do not have first hand experience with these drives.

It all depends on what you want to do. If you want a bullet proof 75mph boat and plan to stick no more money into the IMCO’s other than what you need to bolt them on, go with the IMCO SCX's. With SCX's you will need a helmet and reservoir at a minimum. Depending on the speed you are after you will/may want to add extension boxes and gimbal assemblies, which in a lot of cases is the route you will need to take to obtain higher speeds and handling. If for certain in the future you will be looking for more speed, definitely bite the bullet and go with Arneson. The only way an IMCO is more affordable is due to the lack of parts you get compared to what is in the Arneson package.

In my opinion the hardest part about upgrading a boat is the drives, since you cannot just throw better parts in the ones you have to get them to live like an Arneson, IMCO and #6. Good luck, it was a struggle for me to decide what direction to go in, I chose Arneson!

So if I get this right, spend money on more horsepower to go faster.

Now the drives break so spend money on SCX's to live,,,,,, but lose some speed.
So spend more money to get it back.

Or spend money on the arnesons to live AND gain some speed at the same time,,,,,, mmmmmmm

I suppose that needs some cost review between the two.

The IMCO's are a great way to go. I had them on my 04 38' Top Gun. I lost about 2 to 3 mph on my top speed but the boat hooked up well every time I got on plane and I didn't have any blow out on the props like I did with the XR's. So if you run around all of the time with the sticks pinned to the dash, then you're going to notice a 3 mile per hour loss. I'd be more concerned with reliability than a three mile an hour top end speed loss. But that's just me.
