2007 328 xi and no I did not set the motor before pulling it off and did hear a springing noise when removing the motor

Wind the 4mm allen @ the back of the valvetronic motor clockwise by hand until it stops. Remove the motor and check the base flange and ensure it is flat/straight. Sometimes it helps to wind the motor counterclockwise slightly to get it out. Same goes when you reinstall, wind clockwise and make sure it is fully seated/lined up with the holes, then install the 3 bolts. Cycle the key (start/stop) and listen for the valvetronic to do its full sweep.

No misfires or faults correct?

Also ensure the valve cover gasket hasn't fallen out of its groove/oxygen sensor wiring isn't pinched at the rear of the cover. Use a mirror and check around the whole VC

i live down the street from you, im in Walled Lake, been working for bmw for 10 years. I can swing by. I also believe we meet at the Kielian bday party.
The 30 ft Skater with LS7, not too many out there.

also check the crank vent hose at back of valve cover. make sure its secure and not cracked
