Performance 6.2 versus 7.4 MPI
I'm looking to buy a 232 Baja Islander. If new it might be a 6.2 if used it might be a 7.4. Does anyone know how the performance of the 6.2 stacks up to a big block????310/320 hp? Damn i'm leary about a small block or is this new 6.2 all it's said to be. The 232 is 3900 lbs. If someone has a 232 Islander for sale msg me. You never know right.

Take a 6.2 over a 7.4 MPI anyday. 232 really should have a little more HP than that. You'll be about 60 at best.

take the 6.2 it beats the old 310hp 454 in everyway, more power, lighter weight, and i bet you that 6.2 in a 232 will run around 62mph or 63,

About a year ago I read in a magazine of a test they did between a 377 Scorpion and a 454/310 in a Baja. They even went as far as using the same boat (just swapping engines) Also believe it was a 232. Anyway the 377 Scorpion beat the big block 0-30 and getting to plane ,both because of the weight advantage. Overall the big block was 1 mph faster top end. The 377 could also STAY on plane at a lower speed. Again because of the lighter a$$ end.
The small block got better economy too:D |
the 377 has a higher rpm limit than the 310hp 454, did they swap props will doing this test?

Call me old fashioned, or maybe it's a Tim Taylor thing, but I like having a big block back there, and the bigger the better. ARH ARH ARH !!

only thing is that 310 hp is not much of a big block with the little port heads and all cast crank, and pistons,

I had a 98 232 w/a 7.4, and you should see an honest 60 fairly often. That is a good package, but I would take the 6.2 if I had a choice. More hp, better economy, maybe not as much torque.
I would say if you can step up to a used 25 Outlaw w/a 502 you would be amazed at the difference in ride and feel. Islanders are fun, but Outlaws are the ****. I have had a 25 and my current 29. Good luck. |
