http://www.offshoreonly.com/classifi...o55827-en.html
i like the chain boxes so the drives are close together in a side by side set up.
the boat looks really crusty tho, like it hasn't been maintained worth a crap... and its been fro sale for a while
the dash isnt a turn of for me cuz i would end up redoing the dash with all the gauge for the diesels... what do you guys think?
anyone know the history of this boat??? thx, rm
after hearing you need to go through a pair of 6s so often, im a big arneson fan now. lol

Would like to hear which diesels and gearboxes you would go for?

A pair of MDS VGT500'S (marinized Duramax) would be a bolt in. they can be installed on the same centerlines as the Mercs.

If you want to learn more, they are distributed through Performance Diesel in Texas. Fantastic company to deal with, fantastic powerplant. http://www.performancediesel.com/ -Ask for Troy, tell him Kurt from Maine sent you.

Get a pair of used Cummins 300B's or higher if you want to put that much money in an old Wellcraft?
You can play with the Arenson gears and it will run 60mph or so, cruise all day 50mph and burn almost no fuel. With a little pump recal you can make 330-350 hp and be fine. Get a pair of modified 72C transmissions (the boat has them I'm sure already) , go to someone like OSCO http://www.oscomotors.com/catalog/catalog60.asp and get yourself SAE to 72C adapter plates, B's will only have SAE 2 or SAE 3 housings. Then get drive adapters, solid hubs if you can if not these will hold them http://www.oscomotors.com/catalog/catalog61.asp you may have to re-drill some flywheel holes but put the flywheel on a rotary table and you can do it on a drill press if you had to.
What more do you need, it's an old Wellcraft not an LS, to put big power in it is a waste, it won't go that much faster, 500+ HP engines and they might not even fit!
If you could go for it, this is the one time I would try those Duramax referenced above, the only problem I see is where you are try and get someone to work on them or get parts. Cummins B are all over Central & South America in some form or brand.
If this was me, what I described is exactly what I would do
I think it was said best earlier - do you want to put that kind of money into an old boat?
