Default How do jet ski impellers work? Got a noise like a spun hub....

Got a noise similar to the old days when our old outboard motors would spin a hub.

Do they have a similar arrangement?

2005 GTX Wake......

I take it you have no thrust? There is a wear ring that the impellor is housed in, and if you've been running in shallow water you may have sucked enough sand through to damage the wear ring, or it has become un attached to the housing. It's pretty much a "press type" fit with an adhesive to secure it in place.

Definitely the wear ring it is a easy fix about 75 in parts and a 1 hr of you time. They have videos on YouTube that are pretty good.

To begin with if the wear ring is worn out, it won't make noise. Unless it has come loose in housing ,which is doubtful. If there is a noise ,is it possible you sucked some line up into pump .Did this happen suddenly or was it a slow progression to no thrust

Happened suddenly. Took it off the lift and put on trailer and there is nothing in there.
I notice the drive shaft goes into a rubber looking hub on the backside of the impeller.

Wearing doesn't look horrible, but I guess I'll pull the thing off and look. It works fine in the driveway but seems to "spin out" when there is load on it.

These things are more trouble than they are worth considering I'm bored out of my mind on it after about 4minutes

Several times my kids have managed to get a small stick stuck between the blades and the housing walls. It idles fine but sound like hell if you give it the gas AND it won't go anywhere above idle speed.......unless you remove the bottom grate you can't get in/see all the blades on the impeller (we've been lucky that twice we've experienced this and both times removing a small stick was all it needed)

I'll check Russ, but I pulled the pump this afternoon and didn't see anything. That said when you spin the impeller it is obvious the bearing has given up the ghost
