Some of the boats that are around here I could get a marina to look at but the distant ones I'd rather hire a surveyor. Anyone done that before, how much?

For mine, I set up an appointment with a marina local to my boat and the seller dropped it off to have the inspection done that I pre-paid for. It was an Illinois boat and I'm from michigan.

How much did they charge for that?
Few other questions. A lot of the boats I'm looking at are older and need some work. What have you guys run into as far as major repairs and how costly are they. Things like reapolsering seats and sun decks

If memory serves, it was around 150-200ish. They did a compression test and full visual type inspection. I don't think they hit it with a moisture meter but they confirmed no soft areas and everything mechanical/electrical worked as it should. I can't comment on the reupholstering as mine was all good.

I called on the 1986 242ls with twins. It was an older couple and they haven't used the boat in two years. I asked if they would let me run it down to the marina to have it looked over and they said they don't want to deal with all that because nothing is registered anymore. She did says she's very negotiable on the $7500 though

That 240 is definitely not the 240 sport you would want. The 87-89 240 sport with a 24 degree deadrise is a drop down bolster boat and straight transom with bolted on teak platform usually. the 87-89 240 sport became the 24 outlaw in 1992, same hull exactly. Differences are cosmetic only in the 240 sport and 24 outlaw

NEVER buy a boat with that has a motor in it without doing compression check and leak down at the least. The power plant is what is worth the majority of the money, so one that turns out to be no good puts you way under every time.

How many hours on the 242ls. How mech\anical are you, take water muffs and start it up. Bring gas stabilizer 5 gal premium fuel and a hot battery check oil when running oil preasure, how do the drives and props look, props stainless and straight, what pitch, how does the bottom of the bilge look, (take a mirrir and flashlight) does it idle smoothly, if all looked good (don't forget the trailer tires and brakes) i'd offer $5,00 and take my chances, if they will let you run compression/leakdown test that would be great but that will take some time that engine compartment is tight!
Don't let outdrive problems scare you away alpha drives and major assemblies ore dirt cheap as are the sbc parts.
Check interior and caban, the formula naugaheide is top quality and usually cleans nicely. Maybe take some soft-scrub and try cleaning one of the worse areas. Also check for any open holes on outside of transom for water penetration.
Good luck. (i am partial to this boat-dugh)

yeah. I went and looked at a 1986 272 sr1 today with twin 351mags in it. One owner beautiful boat but he wants 15k firm and it's probably to much boat anyways. I am pretty mechanically inclined and those are some great suggestions so thank you. I set up a time on Sunday to go see the 242ls with the twin 351's. It has 299 hours on it. Like I said it's not in the best shape it need a good cleaning and I think from what iv herd so far $5,000 is fair. The only other boat that keeps peaking my interest is the 242ls with a single 454. He just lowered the price to $5,000, but it has the alpha and that worries me. Is there anyway to beef up the alpha to handle that 454

Yes, convert it to a bravo. Seriously. I did it with a 22 Donzi and it wasn't the end of the world as long as you acquire all of the parts ahead of time to make it go smooth. If you aren't looking to beat the bag out of the boat the Alpha will live if you respect it and treat it gently.
