I've been reading and asking many people as to why a block core pug (AKA freeze plug) would pop out. The most common is expansion of water due to extreme cold, second is corrosion in the water jacket causing it to "push" out and the last is too much coolant pressure from a blown head gasket.

Do not let anyone tell you that marine engines in Texas will not freeze break or pop out freeze plugs. here is the deal, you do not winterize in North Texas you are rolling the dice. We had the hardest winter for 2013 and West Texas was worse. I could not tell you how many people that winterize their own boats do it improperly or do not do it at all. There is more to it than pulling blue drain plugs or brass drain plugs out.
