A little history on Checkmate boats. Built and owned by the Combs family for 44 years until bought by Baja founder Doug Smith in 2007 (Both Mike and Kip Combs continued on board). Sometime around August of 2013 Checkmate was purchase by Global Marine/Hustler Powerboats and continues to build Checkmates in the original factory in Bucyrus, OH. (Kip Combs is still part of the team). They build both I/O and outboard powered performance boats up to 30'. Their mold work is second to none and all the boat decks and hulls are fully end grain balsa cored. There is a great Checkmate forum called checkmate-boats.com where you can find out alot about the various models.

Check out Randy Corson's web site.
http://liberatorfl.tripod.com/
He is the only independent rigger Checkmate will sell blank boats to. His rigging and knowledge of OUTBOARD powered Checkmate setups is second to none. You can see many of his builds on ScreamandFly.com

I have owned 2 Checkmate's, a 253 Convincor, and a 283 Convincor, I loved them both, very well built, ride as good as any boat in their size group, and have a fast hull, the 253 has the same bottom hull as the Baja 25 Outlaw, they were built just down the street from each other, great boats that look great too.

I've got a 2012 BRX2400 with a 300XS Merc and I absolutely love it. The gel finish is amazing and the boat runs a true 70 with NO modifications.

I own two classic Checkmates; a very rare 1984 2800SX (Ashland Special) Twin Outboard and a 1990 Starflite (the 1990 catalog cover boat).
