I have a 32 Dakota, from what I have read the Marlin and Dakota were made by the same company (Frank Passey) not sure about the Marlago and Palmetto but they obviously come from the same molds. I think the Dakota is a pretty well built boat, very happy with it so far.

There's a hot rod with 300X mercs for sale in Sarasota. I can't convince myself that engines that need to be rebuilt at 500 hours is a good idea.

From what I've seen and heard, 250 hrs seems to be about it for the 300x before they need to be rebuilt. EDIT: this is on 28/32 Skaters.
