Do we have to go clockwise or can we go counter clockwise? It makes a huge difference in the decision to make a fuel stop or not.

Clockwise to much havoc if you go the other direction with all the boats at the same time it would be dangerous going down the east river.

Imo it works out better clockwise for a couple reasons. Fuel, ( if you have to stop) the sound can get snotty but most likely will be good enough so some people blow the stuff up. And if your running fuel bags I would rather have that extra pounds used mostly up before hitting the Atlantic

Why would you want to run really heavy in the calm and light in the rough?

Bags are up front. 1500lbs of fuel. On the sound I'm looking at 7 mph max decrease in speed with this lbs. in the ocean I'm looking at stuffing!......

As you explained very well, another reason is the fact that in open ocean racing vs offshore racing, you do not run the boat at top speed over the entire course.

Navigation and quickly changing water conditions play a big part in a winning strategy.

You can't win unless you finish and to finish a 271 mile race, you can't be at redline the whole time.

We just heard from former racer named Rick Stein. He was in the first ever Around Long Island race and we hope that he will be able to attend the Friday night gathering, of a lot of former racers of this race and the world of offshore.
