Those are the same motors that were on the Fazza boat end of last season. Funny how Fazza pulled away with the them and now they only run 5th.
I would bet when Fazza had them the HP was closer to 400hp and now they are a real 300hp. No match with extra weight for the 2 stroke.
A 15" version that does not look like it was built in a garage would be nice. I am sure Kap's boat with 400hp would run 125 or so.

Is 5 blades common in X-Cat or was the set up in the pic to add stern lift to compensate for the extra lbs of the 4 strokes?
Hering advised to run 3 or 4 blades on a 28 a while back on XS'... this isn't an attempt to derail - just a question that plays into getting the most out of the heavy 400R on cats
+1 on Double Rigged's comment about a proper looking 15" mid...hopefully we will see it, The power head is there, gearcase is (somewhat) there- longevity under 400hp?? - just need someone at Merc racing to OK the production of the mids to open up more sales potential for the 400R

These Mercury 400R Verado's are heavy. I am waiting for the 400R X-Cat motors with 15 inch mids and external steering. Currently the 4 Stroke Future... No. 4 boat is running them in the WPPA X-Cat series. They are doing very well coming in 5th overall in qualifying with a female driver. They are not running for points just R&D before they adopt this engine as an alternative to the 2.5.
I have some intel from a current racer who has driven the boat with these motors and his response was "WOW". That's enough for me to be convinced these X-Cat Verado motors are going to be the ticket.

Not only 5th with a skirt behind the wheel, but this boat is also significantly longer that the other boats in the class. I think the class min is 25', this boat is 33'. These guys generally race in very calm water, so the added length is a handicap (not to mention the longer hulls have to carry a weight penalty). I watched the demo drag race they have on you tube, while the 2.5 did narrowly win the race, the hull the 4 strokes were on looked a LOT bigger... it would have been nice to see an apples to apples comparison.
I agree, i wonder what the weight comparison of the boats were (without motor). watching the digital race it is obvious the 2 stroke gets a phenomenal start. they were automatically 11 meters ahead with in the first 5 seconds of the race, however the 4 stroke really held with them and only finished 15 meters behind. if the 4 stroke would have gotten as good of a start, i believe it would have been a very close race. i would like to see them run a couple more times

these x cat hulls are a lot lower profile, wider, lighter and capsule is further back
to get max lift with control with the designed 280 (375lb) motor to get cg just right
if u were to toss the verado at 625-650 on back and go,,,,
boat would not handle well enough to race
as why new hull was designed for the motors,,,,gained length,,,to help compensate transom
I built/raced a few F!/2 tunnels getting the o/b cg just right is a workout
I agree about the debut last yrs race
in practice it was off the pace,,,,
in main it was faster,,,,,,all it takes is a laptop to move hp around
90% of the 15s will go to uim racing
so I believe very few would build a new hull with them
or do a resro on an older hull with the price tag they have
mercs trying to get away from the 2.5
as why it was debued 15" on x cat,,thats its market
on most pleasure hulls the 20" motor will be used
as pleasure boats are taller sided and don't want to wash motors
