how should I clean my air/carb filter on 92 merc 454 (metal Purolator 162.041)
I'm doing some basic maintenance on my new-to-me 1992 26' Sleekcraft. I removed the air filter above the carb which has alot of dirt/film along the fins - so much so that when I shine a light just outside the fins I can't see any light coming through. The filter is a metal unit made by Purolator. What is the best way to clean this like new. BTW - would this have caused considerable performance issues? I ask cause I have not been able to get past 3900rpm - engine should be doing 4600-4800.
Oops - just realized they are called flame arrestors - not filters. Anyway, what is the best way to clean this thing.
Thanks

Pull it off the motor first - then from the inside out spray with brake cleaner to clean . then spray water hose inside out to clean out brake cleaner. Shake well to get excess water out then wipe off with a lint free rag - let dry in the air / sun completely before reinstalling.
Or you can get a pan or bucket and fill with a degreaser mix, then let soak - dunking it once and awhile. The hose off from the inside out and repeat the rest as above.
if it is a K&N branded flame arrestor then the cleaning procedure is different. Just saying for whomever
cover your carb or intake while the flame arrestor is off for cleaning.
