With this many hours on your 454's can you share with everyone what typically you do for maintenance - type/brand of oil, filter, fuel treatment(s) etc.

I have a 2000 7.4 MPI (non-MAG) and I would like to get every hour out of the engine as possible. I don't beat the snot out of it -- but it does get used (fresh water). I'm anal about the maintenance -- for example the flame arrestor gets washed out every two tank fills.

Your experience would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I bought the boat new in O1. I changed the oil every 25 hours and drive oil every 50 hours. I ran it pretty hard the first few years for sure.
I haven't had the boat for several years since I got the Gun but is went to a very good friend and then his brother that still has it.
As you can imagine when Rog got it he used the hell out of it also. Always fresh water. Always in my warehouse in winters so no need to winterize.
I am pretty sure it was Merc oil and filters all the time.
The Mags are different internals then MPIs I think.
Gimbals about every 300 hours.

Great motors

My VR had 378 hrs scanned on the stock 496 HO. 162 hrs at idle to 1499, 73 hrs 1499-2499, can't remember the rest but only .8 hrs at anything over 4500rpms. 155psi cold compression on all cylinders. Other than a bad IAC last year, it has been a very reliable turn key setup.

When I was looking for a twin black motor boat...3 of them had 496's with reversion issues. Not sure if it's the cam, exhaust design, etc...but all of them need to be rebuilt.

engines are expensive. but not as expensive or hard to repair than the hull and interior. get them both surveyed and buy the better hull.

My guess would be tailpipe angle. Some hulls required the riser extensions. With any engine, if you don't get the exhaust right they can revert.
