When I was a teenager the bay we boated on was right on the CDN/U.S. border. Every mile they have markers on the 49th. parallel line to mark the border, they have cleared the land of trees, etc. on the line. So you can clearly see the border from the water, as long as you can see land. They also had an international boundary line buoy just outside the bay. Sometimes either the U.S or Canadian Coast Guard or sometimes police, fish and game from Canada or the U.S, would be out doing checks. Depending on the agency trying to stop us, we'd just book it over the boundary line and make sure they noticed we crossed the border. Amazingly the Canadians wouldn't come into the states and the Americans wouldn't come into Canada. They never caught us. Now they have agreements to let each other cross the border, but before the agreements, they wouldn't cross. Always amazed me that they where that honest.
