Absolutely -- on a 30 year old boat I would expect to create more of a problem than solve anything. You are bound to find something wrong, rot, or some other fun project that you don't want to deal with...

I downloaded a couple vintage brochures from Formula. All their boats of that era have "Safety Foam Construction". Can anyone shed some light on what this is exactly?

Think 1980s Boston Whaler commercials... they fill some hull voids with an expanding foam. It's closed cell, but it can still waterlog. It is required on boats under a certain length by USCG. Older Checkmates had it, and those that found it heavy from being waterlogged had all kinds of fun removing it.

Too bad this is a F3LS not 242. A little shorter and no bolsters but a nice looking boat.

Not concerned about bolsters... probably prefer without anyway. But that is a pretty good example of what I'm looking for condition wise. I would even consider going down in size for something that nice. TX is too far though. Within one days drive I would do.

If I was in the market now I would look at this one. If interested I would contract BUP (here on OSO) to survey and if liked it negotiate the best deal he could and close.
No BBC but that SBC puts out 40 more HP. And it has bolsters, CLOSED Cooling, Hydraulic steering and a triple axle trailer. That vintage of 271 is same length of a 242.
Why no interior pics?

Good luck I am sure you will never look back after buying a Formula.

Dang man, if a day total extra isn't worth it for the right boat WTF?
PS I bet you will be sorry with no bolsters. Start another thread about "bolsters/no bolsters preferences and why?" might be interesting for others also.

Bolsters aren't a big deal to me since I'm not really into driving it that hard, especially if it only has an alpha. So long as I have a decent view in the seat, I'm happy. I guess I may have to re-figure my distance limit because you are right, it isn't easy finding the right boat.
