OT: Surround sound systems
I was wanting to get a basic surround sound system for my bedroom. This week, Circuit City has a Magnavox surround sound system with a sub and five other speakers and a dvd player for $200. Is this a decent system and is this a reasonable price? Remember, this is for my bedroom and I do not want to spend a whole lot of money. This system will only be used for watching cable tv and dvds. Also, with a surround sound system like this, isn't it almost a necessity to have S-video capabilities with the tv? Thanks.

surrounded...
You've already got a computer.
Get a tv vid card...ATI all-in-wonder, hook to TV.
Logitech z-560 surround will cover a bedroom,
and the whoofer will induce orgasmic resposes
in most women.
Wanna go high buck, the logitech Z-680
will break glass...i'm not kidding.

I own a custom install A/V co. Here is how I'd answer that.
1. It's what you know or have heard before. It's like having a bayliner 17' for years and taking a ride in a cigarette.
2. The $200 system is like a bayliner.
3. It will sound better than the speakers in your TV and at $200 with a DVD player thats better than the TV speakers. So how could you go wrong.

At $200 you should not expect too much. But for a bedroom system, you do not need too much. You will get a much better picture with the S-video connection to you television than with the standard composite video connection. Component video is another step above S-video but many people cannot tell the difference between S-video and component video connections, especially on smaller TV's.

The only person that can answer this question is you. Honestly if it was me I would just save my money. Do NOT expect much if anything out of these systems. Your TV speakers could be better. Take a listen to it in the store and figure it will probably sound mildly better in the house then the store.
