Computer Problems

Gordo's computer is acting up. When we shut down the computer won't shut down. We have to restart it and wait for it to go through scan disk then shut it down. It will shut down then. The operating system on the computer is Windows 98. I've heard that Windows 98 is famous for this. I'm running out of ideas on how to fix it. Anyone have any ideas....before Gordo attempts to take the computer a part and fix it himself??? I'm afraid if we keep shutting it down this way that eventually the computer is going to crash and die. BTW....no, he doesn't have a restore disk.....

first would be to leave the computer on for a day or two, next you might try shutting off any anti-virus software before shutting down.

Cowgirl,

You can try this -

http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/d...tured/Win98SE/

Or for a listing of more shutdown fixes, go here -

Good luck,
Casey

BTW ............This is a software problem, not hardware. So don't let Gordo take the cover off!  ;)

Thanks everyone.....I'll try these ideas and see if that helps!

CJC,

Trust me.....I AM trying to fix Gordo's computer BEFORE he takes the cover off!!! I heard he took the cover off his last computer...and well he had to get a new one....

Actually, I was having the same problem... It also would just shut down in the middle of a task.... I sprayed air all over the hd, inside and the circut outside. Seemed to work good for me.

uhhhhh, I thought I could take the cover off without H2O finding out.
Unfortunately, Now the first thing that pops up when I restart is this message on a black screen...

Alert! Cover has been removed.

Fu#@ing Dell...

HyperBaja -

I just happen to have a can of air. I'll try that too.

To get rid of that, go into setup (F2, F10, Esc, something like that during bootup - it should tell you) and reset Chasis intrusion alert.

:eureka: ...or just select disable so Cowgirl won't know next time.

:p :p

GORDO - Dell does that for us Admin types. So we know who has been sticking their hands in the cookie jar. You can reset the alert in the bios.

H2O - The problem is software related, Hyper got lucky. Windows 98, 95 and Millennium for that matter are all notorious for these types of problems. You can try some of the fixes suggested on Microsoft's website but in the end the only way to truly leave the problems behind is to upgrade to Windows XP. For business use professional edition for everyone else home edition works great.
