Need Help-trailer Tires
 

It's finally time (actually overdue) for 6 new trailer tires for the ol' Eagle trailer. It's a triple axle and the guy at my local tire joint is suggesting a move to radials?!?! Any suggestions?? We are making a trip to Lake Erie from Virginia in July and I need to make sure I make the BEST decision!!!

I run Carlisles on all my trailers....I am not sold on radials for
trailers....I don't like the sidewall "squirm"....
lotsa guys on here seem to like the goodyear Marathon...

Just make SURE you run a TRAILER tire !! Properly rated for the
load & Properly INFLATED !!

I would not go with Radials on a trailer.

I had radials on a tandom axle trailer and a single engine boat. The Carlisles were recommended by a friend who is in the tire business and towing was greatly improved. Your set-up would not be as bad with the third axle but worse because of the weight.

I've had very good luck with Carlisles on all of my trailers. Some have not. The trick is to make sure that the load rating of the tires combined is well in excess of the weight of the loaded boat and trailer. Compromising on load rating so they fit 'cool-looking' mags and downsizing so they fit better within the fenders is a sure-fire way to problems on the road.
The Goodyear Marathons are very good tires as well, and I also know people who love the Continentals.
Always inflate to max cold PSI as it reads on the sidewall on any trailer tire, and check often.
Radials make the rolling load seem easier to pull I think.
Make sure they are 'ST' tires. No automotive tire will hold up!

Every new trailer I have had has come with Carlisles and they are crap! Go with the Goodyears. Like others have said, make sure they are ST tires with the proper load rating and inflated properly.

I just switched to radials and I'm glad I did. I don't have a big boat but for whatever reason I have a triple axle trailer and the radials seem to pull much better than the bias I had before. I'm not sure what brand radials I have but they are specifically for trailers. I thought that the original issue was for maneuvering bias were better as they don't have the steel belts that will actually cut the plies when turning the trailer in tight spots. This is not true and should not be part of your decision. Bias tires will bounce more and absorb more than the radials will, but if you are towing on the highway, definitely go with the radial. I don't have any regrets and I don't notice a difference at all other than the radials pull a little better.
