USCG COD Numbers, where do you put them?
 

I have registered my boat as a documented vessel with the U.S. Coast Guard. They give you a documentation number. They say that this number must be displayed in 3" letters on the inside hull of the boat for identification purposes.

I was thinking of mounting the numbers on the vertical face of the hull between the sun pad and the hull. However, you would have to lift the engine hatch to see the numbers if I mount them there. Is this OK? I really don't want to put those big numbers in the cockpit on the hull where it is readily visible. Where does everyone else mount them? Thanks in advance for your replies. Eric

On the transom inside the engine compartment.

I simply had to change the USCG documentation to my name. The previous owner had then numbers down near the floor beside the passenger bolster. I didn't move them.

Its okay to put them on the inside of the engine compartment? Because this is where I want to put them.

i'm thinking of documenting a boat.... what are the cost's ... ongoing cost's ... advantages / disadvantages ????

The main advantage we received was the savings on Missouri state sales tax, our boat was under $50,000 so it only costs us I think it was about $175 to register with the Coast Guard and then we had to pay the state of Missouri around $680 for the USCG vessel documentation fee for the state of Missouri. If we elected not to go the USCG Documented Vessel Route then we would have had to pay the full 6.5% sales tax of the purchase price for the state of Missouri. We saved about half the amount in sales tax going with the USCG Vessel documentation.

that's very worth while then.......... are there yearly costs associated with documented vessels ?

It is OK to put them in the engine compartment as long as they can see them when you open the hatches. You have to put some clear epoxy over them so they can't be tampered with. And don't forget the "NO" has to be in front of the number.
