Default Volunteer boats needed for NJ Offshore Races

Hello Captains, Racers and Race Fans,

Summer is just around the corner and with it comes another summer of Offshore Powerboat Racing. This year we have something very special planned for you. A newly invigorated series of races focused on bringing great racing back to the South Jersey Beaches. In the past, the large number of racing classes made it inevitable that each class would only have one or two participants. In the last few years, if we had five boats in a single class it was considered to be a well attended class. This year will be very different.

Here’s what’s new for 2003. OPA has become it’s own racing organization. In the past OPA ran the NE division for SBI. This year, OPA will race under it’s own banner and rulebook. This allows OPA to make some radical changes to the class structure that has been met with rave reviews from race teams throughout New England and the Mid Atlantic states. This departure from the past should help to increase competition and spectator friendliness. OPA races will now only offer five classes of racing. P-1 to P-5 speed brackets will determine the racing class assigned to each boat.

· P5 – 70 and under
· P4 – 70 to 80
· P3 – 80 to 90
· P2 – 90 to 100
· P1 – Over 100mph

This doesn’t mean that Factory 1 boats or any other class of boat aren't welcome, it just means that an F1 boat would run in P-4 and an F2 boat would run in the P-3 class. Sealed motors aren’t needed but they are more than welcomed. The nice thing is that racers can build their own motors to any spec because the classes are defined by speed rather than engine or hull specifications. This compression of the classes will serve to ensure that there are more boats per class. From preregistration numbers it looks like we see 10 or more boats in P5 class alone.

OPA expects to have a banner year of racing and of course, as always, we need your help to put the races together in a safe and orderly fashion. It is unfortunate that even after looking into all the alternatives, the first race date will again conflict with the NJPPC poker run to Atlantic City. Many of our volunteer captains look forward to this poker run each year and won’t be able to make the first race of the year, so for the rest of the volunteer captains, please mark your calendars now to get the boat in the water early.

May 31 - June 1 Brick NJ
June 21 - 22 Seaside Heights NJ
July 19 - 20 Atlantic City NJ
Aug 14 - 15 Point Pleasant Beach NJ
Sept 6 - 7 Liberty State Park NJ
Sept 20 - 21 TBA

The Brick race will serve as the kick off event for this Brick’s Summerfest 2003. The day before the race should be a great Saturday to bring the family to Windward Beach. Of course all the boats will be on display and high speed testing will take place in the river in front of the park. This year we will also have gas powered remote control car racing. These are monster truck style pickups that can exceed 40mph. A racetrack will be set up on the grass field. If your interested in racing contact VC Hobbies in Beachwood 732 349 2500. Additionally there will be a band and a professional skateboarding show. Basically bigger and better than last year in every way.

The Atlantic City race is a new addition to the schedule for this year. This race is hosted and sponsored by the City of Atlantic City and should be a great event that has been long overdue. If you think you can attend the A/C race, please mark the sheet below.

ATTENTION RACERS: A preseason racers meeting has been scheduled for Saturday April 26th at 1pm. The meeting will be held at Crabby's restaurant on Princeton Ave in Brick NJ. You can find a map to Crabby's restaurant at www.njoffshore.homestead.com/crabbys.html. This is a must attend meeting for any racer planning to race with OPA this summer. All outstanding issues will be addressed at this meeting. Please mark your calendar and make plans to attend. This meeting is open to any and all race team members and fans so don't be bashful and bring the family. This series is all about having family fun so pack up the mini van and come to Crabby's for lunch with OPA.

There are lots of other new events in the works off the water. The first event is coming up soon. May 23rd at the Lakewood Blue Claws Stadium in Lakewood NJ, come join us for OPA day. The Blue Claws will be playing the North Carolina Kannapolis Intimidators, owned by Dale Earnhardt Inc. OPA will have race boats on display, and possibly some Winston Cup cars. Oh and did I forget to mention a tailgate party from 5 to 7 pm, game starts at 7pm. A great day for the entire family. Tickets are $10.00 and have to be purchased in advance. For info and tickets call Smitty 732 920 3945 or Email [email protected]. You can also go towww.homestead.com/njoffshore/Events.html and download the forms to fax or mail.

OPA is growing in every direction for 2003, the schedule has more races, the fleet of race boats has tripled and the OPA marketing team has scheduled some events to increase public awareness of the offshore races. Please come out and support these events.

The OPA and Jersey Boyz now have their own section on the H2O web site. www.h20performance.com/offshore/jerseyboyz/. If your racing with OPA this season, please send me your profile to have it listed on the H20 site.

There are many emails that go out throughout the year but because of costs and time, usually only one or two letters via US Postal Service. If you have email, please join the mailing list at www.njoffshore.com. You’ll get many more updates prior to the race and results in your email after the race. It’s all free for anyone with an active email account.

On behalf of NJ Offshore Racing Association, OPA and the Racers, THANK YOU for coming out and making these races the safest in the nation.

See ya at the races,

Ron Polli

Ron P,
Just one question you say OPA will race under it's own banner and rulebook but you still show a SBI race date of sept. 6-7 as an OPA race why is that , I don't think that race will happen like you say.

Driver, OPA still has a working relationship with SBI so that one SBI national race will serve as an OPA race as well.

Marty,

Once an EMT always an EMT. You will always stop and help.
Now you just have a means of getting there faster when in need...
