Ft. Myers Smiles
Poker Runís America Event Becomes Child SMILE America Tour Stop
Rides and Funds to benefit the Downtown Management Corporation Childrenís Charities
By Michelle May -Schmidt

Ft. Lauderdale, FL - - As the Downtown Management Corporation kicks off the first ever, Ft. Myers Poker Run, the Child SMILE America Tour will be adding a winning hand to the fold, namely a $5,000.00 that will benefit a number of local Childrenís Charities.
Added to that will be a special appearance by Naples powerboat racing dentist, Dr. Gerardo Santiago, National and World Champion Driver, who, as part of the tour, will be donating rides in his Zero Cavity raceboat. In fact, a ride in a boat may be just what the doctored ordered, adding a number of childrenís smiles to the already winning weekend planned.
The Ft. Myers Poker Run will attract boaters from across the U.S. and Canada, who will participate in the Poker Run on Saturday. More fun is in store on Friday, when a Downtown Block Party will be held. Set to raise funds for both the Childrenís Charities in the area, the event will also benefit Healthy Start, a campaign that provides food and assistance to young mothers with newborns.
"The Downtown Management Corporation actually hosts around 15 events a year to help our childrenís charities. We are very excited about adding our Poker Runs America Magazine event as well as being included in the Child SMILE America Tour," said Sharon Anderson, Vice President of Fast Cats and Producer of the Poker Run, sanctioned by the American Poker Runís Association (APRA).
The 2003 Child SMILE America Tour, underwritten through generous donations such as the one for the Ft. Myers Childrenís Charities, are courtesy of the "Santa Claus of Offshore," Barkley Geib, of Buford, Georgia.
"When we heard about the great work being done to raise money for the kids, we thought the event fit perfectly into our Child SMILE America Tour. The kids will get the powerboat rides and the program will get the donation to help them continue showing the kids that there are people out there who care and we care all year long. Itís all about the little people," said Geib, who is celebrating the 10th Anniversary of his own APRA sanctioned Poker Run event in August.
Geibís event features high performance boats of all lengths and speeds as well as cruisers, and pontoon entries, and has prize opportunities in excess of $350,000.00 this year. "We invite all the Florida boaters to come visit our waterways and have a great time raising money for our kids here, as well."
Working with the Ft. Myers Downtown Management Corporation is especially satisfying for Santiago, who began giving his Ride of a Lifetime over four years ago, and now joins in the Child SMILE America Tour in the same place he has raced for a number of years.
"I carry a soft spot in my heart for the kids from Ft. Myers and am excited to be able to bring my boat back to give them the rides this year. We always have fun on the water and they love driving my boat!" said the Doctor, who will also be attending the Super Boat International Powerboat Races on Ft. Myers Beach the following weekend.
"We are very fortunate to have the generosity of Barkley Geib, Dr. Santiago, and our sponsors; Poker Runs America Magazine, Competitive EDGE Marine, The Aqua Toy Store and the Offshore Racing Review as the foundation for our Tour. We hope that more companies will join us in our pledge to make the world a better tomorrow for our kids, starting today," said Michelle May Ė Schmidt, founder of the Tour.
The Poker Runs America Ft. Myers Event kicks off this weekend with the Downtown Block Party from 2:00pm until 10:00pm. The Party will feature food and retail vendors, a 40 member motorcycle show, exotic powerboat displays, a special visit by Mayor Jim Humphries, and a Silent Auction for the Charities.
Santiagoís powerboat rides for the kids will be held at 6:00pm at the City Pier and Yacht Basin. A special appearance will be made by Geibís Poker trailer, which features racing apparel as well as special Child SMILE America Tour T-Shirts, which commemorate the tour and the stops along the way.
Registration for the Ft. Myers Poker Run is open on Friday from 11:00am until 9:00pm at the Fast Cats Office, 1300 Hendry Street, Downtown Ft. Myers. Tel 239-337-2255. Host Hotel is the Holiday Inn Riverwalk, Tel 239-334-3434. The run will make stops at Boca Grande Pass, Gaparilla Island Marine, South Seas Plantation, Miserable Mile Market, with a Reggae Party at Toocan Charlies Bar.
