Kiekhaefer is what I use. The MM and Lathams look sweet but I have never used them. KKs are rock solid though. Never had a problem.

Do they have to be "better" ..... I do think they are MUCH nicer

Just look at the helm of two boats ... one with K's and one with Latham or MM.

Maybe it's just me

lathams are smoother, look better and you can't bend them. you also don't get the clicking noise you get with kk's.

also they fit your hand much better. better ergonomic's.

tried both the k's and gaffrig controls. the gaffrig were uncomfortably stiff. certainly not zero effort, yet there may have been binding in the cable run. the k's seemed to lack a neutral indent, however the throttle felt great! only required fingertip control.
