OT: ? for 1 Ton owners or engineers

Can someone tell me why 1 ton truck have front axles that appear to wide? What I mean is why do they have such a huge back spacing on the front rims?

I would think that for strength, you would want equal rim spacing front and back. My guess is that in the beginning no one made an axle that strong in the correct width and that they needed a rim with a lot of back spacing to make up for the difference. If this is true, with the number of 1 tons out there, you'd think they could make them the right size now.

Is it that people got used to the look and no one wanted to change it for fear that buyers would not think it was strong enough?

Just thinking out loud...

I always kinda wondered that myself. That is why a lot of custom guys make "phantom duallies" to avoid that front axle sticking out, but still have serious meet on the back.

Its so you can have one spare and not two different rims.....think about it.....if you had a normal rim on the front and had a rim the same as that rim as a spare and had a blow out on the rear dually you wouldnt be able to put the spare on and have duallys on the rear.....make sense? :D

That's it?

So all six rims are the same?

If so, I feel much better. The world is at peace now. :D :D

yes all 7 (remember spare? :D ) are the same......and on the front its only a big spacer thats bolted to the assembly that spaces the rim out that far so it wont rub on you while turning........if you wanted to put a normal style rim on the truck you could just unbolt the 8 lugs holding it in place and put any 8 lug rim you want on..... I was at one point gonna lower my dually but just couldnt justify doing it....and was going to put one huge tire in each wheel well of the dually in the rear and some normal rims up front for that pro street look.......i just dont think that crewcabs look all that good sitting lower then they all ready are...but thats just me :D

It also allows you to rotate all 6 tires.
