Default 316 vs 304 stainless

I want to have a custom grab handle fabricated. I originally wanted 316 stainless because I knew that it would take a fine polish that wouldn't corrode. The problem is that nobody has it in stock. Is 304 stainless an acceptable alternate?

Structurally they are very similar, 316 is a little better in corrosive environments, but 304 should be fine. Welding should be kept to a minimum with 304.

316 is a better material when subjected to high temps. (over approx. 800 F) high stress, or corrosive environment. None of the above should occur with a grab handle.

Ask for 304L (Low carbon) if they have it. It will be less susceptible to corrosion. Most railings are made out of 304L.

Ok, guys. It looks like the cost is pretty simular. Guess the 304 will be ok then! There apparently is a 304L which is supposed to be more weldable. I'll see what the availability of that is. Sure appreciate the help!
