Had the same type of problem with my boat. Gauge was reading 3/4 full when empty and peged the needle when full. (took sending unit out and rehooked wires up and moved float to find out. Ithought it was the sending unit replaced sending unit same problem. Repaced gauge fixed problem. The coast of sending unit and gauge $60.

I would change both and its fixed.
