Best Compass
Buying a new compass today.
Looking at a Ritchee SS 1000. White with Blue compass card. Good? Bad? Is their a better one? Buying it through Boater's World. Anybody know a better deal. I need to buy one with in a week. |
You can't go wrong with a Ritchee. Not the best, but still very good. They're standard equipment on most boats and I've never had problems.
If you want something top of the line, Weems and Plath make the finest compasses. http://www.weems-plath.com/products.html http://www.weems-plath.com/pdfs/compasses.pdf Expensive though. |
Spend the money on a good GPS.....throw in a good hand held compass for a back up....my.02

Well I got a hole where the old compass was, so the handheld thing is out.
I agree on the GPS though... |
Put a plate over thge hole and mount a Garmin 182 on it! about $600

Compass - KVH digital
GPS - Garmin 182 |
My Ritchie compass works great, for the money they are very steady and readable bouncing around in heavy seas.
|
Ritchie compass, and a GPS. I don't agree with the suggestion for a digital compass. The idea is redundancy. Why have an electronic compass, and an electronic nav device (GPS). A standard compass will always work.
|
I agree with Horseplay3, also is it possible to read a handheld compass while steering, working throttles, & looking for obstructions ahead of you in a moderate chop at cruising speed?
|
Ritchie definitely!!! There really cool with the white or blue options too.
