Default OPA Racing Update for this weekend

Hello Race Fans,

THIS IS IMPORTANT. PLEASE READ.

Sunday's race is shaping up to he quite a dogfight. There are several teams that have been poking at each other throughout the winter and this being the first OPA race of the season, the gloves are coming off. Watch for some great racing in all the classes.

It seems that some of the teams are starting a new racing tradition this season. The new dare is to have the loser wash the winner's boat. No longer is getting a trophy enough, now these guys need to really rub it in after the race is over.

As for the weather????????????? We are hoping for NO RAIN. However, we have raced before in some pretty lousy conditions in the past as there is no rain date and some of these teams have traveled great distances to be here. The rule of thumb is if the helicopters can fly, we can race. It's really a matter of visibility. This is where we really count on you to button up the canvas and make the show. Please do a sun dance or two between now and Sunday. We can also delay the race for up to two hours. So 3PM would be the latest that the race could possibly start. Stay tuned to channel 78a on your VHF radio and listen to race control. Also the race will have some live broadcasts on 100.1 Oldies 100 FM. They might give some information about the races.

Here's the run down.

Volunteer Captains - You must have someone from your crew attend the water volunteers meeting at 5PM Saturday afternoon at the Windward Beach Band Shell. At this meeting you will receive, two tickets to the Jenkinsons Party that follows at 7PM, your assignment paperwork, a nice new flag to fly on your boat during the event, (Thanks to Jerry's Cleaners in Brick NJ). I recommend getting a long piece of PVC tubing and tie wrap the flag to the pole and put it in a pole holder. And God Willing, two T-Shirts. We will collect the flags in the inlet after the race.

On Sunday Morning you will need to be in the area of the Coast Guard Station at Manasquan Inlet between 10 and 11:30 to be inspected by the Marine Police. They will randomly inspect our boats and they will be looking for these five basic essentials and nothing more.

A Sound-producing device - Air or electric powered that works. Yelling doesn't count.
A throwable floatation device - Preferably with a line attached.
Proper registration papers - and decals in place.
Flares - not expired.
Fire Extinguisher - not expired.

Please be prepared. You will also need a VHF radio. Handheld radios are usually fine.
Turn Boats will need to pick up scorers at the Wharfside by 10:30. Dive and Medic boats need to be at the Coast Guard Station by 10:30 to pick up the support personnel. All boats need to be in position by 12:30 for a 12:45 fly over. The race will start at 1pm. I should add that we have been right on time the past few races.

You'll get all the details at the meeting at 5pm this Saturday afternoon.

Racers - You must have at least one crewmember attend the 11am drivers meeting at the band shell in Windward Beach on Saturday. Testing on the Manasquan River will be available from 2-4 on Saturday afternoon for all registered boats.

Overnight race boat dockage is available next to Windward Beach at the Laurelton Yacht Club. No crane will be available until 9am Sunday morning.

On Sunday morning, physicals will be held at Windward Beach from 7 to 9am. All race boats will then leave the wet pits at noon under police escort.

Race Fans - Plan on being at Windward Beach on Saturday for some family fun.
100.1 FM will be broadcasting live for the band shell, the Hell On Wheels Skateboard Stunt show will run throughout the day starting at noon. The local Corvette and vintage car clubs will be bringing some cars. Come see gas powered Remote Control truck racing from 1 to 3 pm (Call Vinny at 732 349 2500 to enter the R/C race).

From 2-4 pm some of the race boats will be allowed to test on the river in front of the dry pit area. We need a few patrol boats to keep the testing course clear. If your one of our volunteer captains and your in the area, please see if you can come out for these two hours and help keep the sailboats off the race course. Please be on 78a.

On Sunday, get a good seat at the inlet by 12:30 as the Coast Guard will close the inlet for a minutes around 12:50 which allows the fleet of racers to come out of the inlet at speed. This is always quite a show in itself. Once the boats go out the inlet they will mill in front of the Jenkinson's Beach for five minutes and then start by heading south. You can see the race anywhere from Jenkinsons to Bridge Ave in Bayhead. Enjoy.

See ya at the races,

Ron
