O/T Garage Floor Epoxy Paint??
 

We just bought a new home and I would like to Epoxy the Garage Floor, what I have found it that if I have someone do it for me it get's real expensive very fast!! So I thought I would do it myself. I helped a friend paint his garage floor years ago but he bought the stuff and I just helped roll it on.....

Has anyone used an Epoxy on their Garage Floor??
If so what brand was it??
Anything to watch out for??
Any Do's or Don't's about it?

For the epoxy to adhere the concrete must be absolutly clean. There are rotary pressure blasters that you can rent. They look like a large orbital floor sander and work about the same. If you cheat on the prep the stuff will peal up and make for a ugly mess. Trust me, I've seen it too often.

Also broadcast some sand into the epoxy. If any fluid gets on the floor it'll be really slippery. The sand will add some grit to keep things safe.

As far as clean goes, it's a brand new home, well it's been the model home since last August, so it pretty darn clean. It's never had a car on it, yet still I have heard that I better clean it as best as I can!!

I may be able to help a little here. I spray polyurethane coatings at my shop. The company that I use to supply me also has several other residential and industrial coatings that they sell. One of them is a high quality coating that works well for what you need. It can be rolled on or sprayed through an airless sprayer that you could rent. I haven't done my garage yet but need to. Would be more than happy to get you some info.

Cord is dead on about the prep. Regardless of how clean the floor is I would still recommend renting a water sander of some sort to give the area a good texture. It's not worth doing twice.

Like Cord said, those epoxy floors can get VERY slippery. They clean up nice and look great but add the sand.

I used the Griots 2-part epoxy on my floor. After 5 years still looks great, just follow the instuctions and spread the non-skid on the wet 1st coat.

I suggest you DO NOT paint it. To much potential for cracking and peeling. Instead stain it and seal it.
