Kudos to Steve Miklos!!!
Knowing Steve, doesn't surprise me one bit! :)
---------------------------- APBA Offshore LLC and Certified Racing Equipment, Inc. had originally scheduled to test equipment this weekend. Testing new equipment for future consideration in the APBA Offshore classes is the job of CRE. Today's test was for the GM Vortec engine and some outdrive skegs. The testing outing was normal today just as hundreds of times before, except today would not be just another test. Upon arrival at the launch ramp, the test team found a water rescue in the works. The EMT’s were launching a rescue vessel for a Chicago tourist who had severed a finger on Anclote Island, a small island a few miles offshore. A quick glance at the rescue vessel was all that was required for Steve Miklos, APBA Offshore Competition Director, to realize that their vessel was not the optimal choice of boats with a 15-Knot wind blowing onshore. After a quick discussion with an EMT, Miklos seated the rescuer in the throttle position of the test boat. Throttling and steering from the helm position, Miklos and the EMT reached the Island in just under six minutes through three to five foot seas. The unidentified victim, a female on vacation, was taken to the hospital along with her severed finger packed on ice in hopes of a successfull surgical reattachment procedure. Miklos commented "as a boat racer, when you see a rescue in the works, your natural instinct is to help anyway you can". " I think when we saw the emergency vehicles and our Jim Poplin STARS training just kicked into gear." "We got involved with assisting in anyway possible" Miklos continued. Steve Miklos is a 2002 and 2003 National and World Champion racer. "That showed again today", commented Michael Allweiss, APBA Offshore LLC Chairman. "APBA Offshore extends their prayers and wishes for a speedy recovery to the injuried Florida visitor", Allwiess continued. STARS is the famous rescue team that trains and protects all APBA Offshore racers at their events throughtout the year. |
