Question merc 502 or blown 454?

Im looking at possibly getting a 22' scarab. I found one powered by a merc 502 and another one powered by a procharged 454. if boats are in similar condition which motor is better as far as reliability and/or speed?

Buy the one with the 502 and you can pep it up a little later. I'm not a big fan of Prochargers especially if it is a carbed application.

The procharged one is going to be faster. What motor is more reliable? I would say the 502, any time you extract more HP from a motor you may lose a little reliable. Of course the 502 could let loose before the procharged one. What one would I have more fun with? The procharged one. Nothing like owning a boat that is blown.

Did the 454 start life as a 330HP or 365HP?

Who did the blower install? What was changed? How much boost has it run in the past versus now? See where I am going with this?

I think where some are going, is we know the 454 was modified, since it has a procharger. Question is the 502 stock or has it been modified. Just because a motor has a whipple or procharger on it does not mean the motor is any more or less reliable that a modifed 502. Who is to say the 502 did not have a whipple or procharger on it before they put it up for sale?
