UQM Technologies Receives Award From the U.S. Navy For Development of a Hybrid Electric Boat
FREDERICK, COLORADO, July 9, 2003 ... UQM TECHNOLOGIES, INC. (AMEX:UQM), a developer of alternative energy technologies, announced today that it has received a contract from the U.S. Navy to evaluate the application of hybrid electric propulsion to small military boats. The $70,000 Phase I contract was awarded by the Office of Naval Research under the Small Business Innovation Research program and will be performed over a period of six months.
“This contract represents our first award from the U.S. Navy for the potential application of hybrid electric technology in watercraft”, said William G. Rankin, President and Chief Executive Officer of UQM Technologies. “We believe that hybrid electric propulsion can enhance the performance and utility of a wide range of watercraft demonstrating benefits similar to those achieved by ground vehicles including improved fuel consumption and lower emissions. We are pleased that the Navy has chosen our Company to evaluate the feasibility of applying hybrid electric technology to small military boats”.

Our Integrated Electric Traction System (INTETS) was designed and developed for use in electric or hybrid electric vehicles as the primary propulsion system. INTETS incorporates a 75 kW motor/generator, single stage gear reduction, differential, and parking pawl in one small 11.4 by 15.4 inch package. INTETS puts out 1255 lbf-ft of torque with a peak overall system efficiency, including power electronic controller, greater than 91%.

Looks like they will need a drive.
We had 1450 hp (equivalent) with the Patriot Le Mans program.

I've been following UQM Technologies (previously Unique Mobility) for ten to fifteen years and they are very innovative in the products they have made. They were founded by the father of the Ford Mustang and have been mostly research and development but not yet profitable.
The $70,000 for the first phase is probably just for brain storming. It will be interesting to see what they come up with because, as stated above, the torque could be unbelievable if they can develop a decent energy source.
