Trailer bearings

How much heat should you feel on lets say the bearing cap after the bearings come up to operating temp? I know we all check them at gas stops BUT HOW MUCH HEAT IS A PROBLEM?

Mine are very warm to the touch, I can cup my hand around them without feeling like I'm going to be burned. But they are warm. This is after towing up and down hills here in PA. Now my buddy just last weekend, we went around his 6 wheels and 5 felt the same and right away you could tell something was wrong with the 6th one, couldn't touch it for more than a second or two.... something was wrong!!! Bearing not lugged on tight enough, worn bearing, not enough grease, brakes holding on are just some of the issues...

I can hold my hand on the hub with no fear of being burned.
