APBA Offshore Brings Powerboat Excitement Back to Grand Bahama Island

The second annual Grand Bahama Island Championship, presented by the Islands of the Bahamas, will bring more of the world’s most powerful boats to Grand Bahama Island on September 26-28, 2003. This will be the racers’ sixth race on the 2003 GMC Pro Grade Series APBA Offshore racing circuit. APBA Offshore teams will be competing for Pro Series points on Saturday and Sunday which will determine the season’s national title champions.

APBA Offshore’s new “stadium style” race courses provide fans and motor sport enthusiasts with uncomparable viewing of the racing action as the boats blast by a mere 100 feet from the beaches. These incredible racing machines can run up to speeds of 135 miles per hour for 50 to 90 miles depending on their classification. Spectators can view the races by water, or along the pristine beaches.

There will be plenty of excitement and fun for the entire family throughout the weekend. Grand Bahama Island offers fantastic entertainment, duty-free shopping and, of course, great fun at the casinos. The Race Village, where the powerboats are on display, will include food and drinks, event merchandise, and exhibitors.

"A weekend of APBA Offshore racing is more than being a spectator," said Michael Allweiss, Chairman of APBA Offshore Power Boat Racing LLC. "It’s an experience. You can get close to the incredible boats, talk to the teams and better understand the sport.”

Be prepared to pay a little bit extra when bringing your boat into the Bahamas. I don't know if arrangements have been made for the raceboats, but now it is between $100-$300 a boat depending on the size to have a boat in the islands. $100 for boats upto 35' $300 for boats over that

Cannot wait for this one. Great start in racing there last year for Dr. Harlan, who's wife bought him a lease for the race for his Birthday. And he won his first race. Good luck on the repeat!

A friend of mine running SVL said at the last drivers meeting, it was mentioned that the boats might have to run over on their own (on their own bottoms, in the water). Is this really going to happen? Hell, just make it a true ocean race!!!!!! That would be a blast!!

DJD:

We won that race last year from Riveria Beach to West End w/ 10-12's in the Gulfstream - didn't we Steve / Bill? That was the craziest thing I've ever done - BH

That's what I heard, too! Now, that would make a great ocean race!

while it would make for a great spectacle, what happens when half way there , or better yet you 3/4's the way there and you break, well your weekend points for a possible championship are gone, your boat is some where where parts and such are hard to comeby as are tools, there are a lot of teams that speak of budget, is this in their budget??? just being realistic, when offshore racing went offshore, you had a navigator, a life raft 3 days rations, etc etc. while it could be fun, i dont think it is practical with the safety standards that are set today, just my opinion.

Pete
I think the logistics would be a nightmare!! Perhaps the classes could run in a pack until the reached a specific point where safety teams could keep an eye on everyone & then it's all out racing??
