Labor Day Lake Camping? Where?...

Several friends will be heading to Kerr Reservoir (aka Buggs Island Lake) in south-central Virginia as early as tomorrow for the Labor Day weekend. Some will be in campgrounds such as North Bend Park adjacent to the dam and in cabins at Satterwhite Point. Since my wife will be in Tampa on a business seminar, I'm probably going as well to North Bend Park. Of course boats will be in tow as this place is large enough for ocean going sailboats to cruise.
Who else is hittin' the road to pitch a tent, fire up the Barbie (grill that is) and enjoy some fresh water (referring to the salty dogs out there) cruising?

What lake/reservoir?
What park/campground?
What days?

Reckless,

About 15 of us are making a trip to Smith Mountain Lake. Leaving Wednesday afternoon til monday.

Cool! Are you staying in a cabin or a campsite? Ever been to Kerr Reservoir?...

WALKIN THE DOG 08-26-2003 09:53 AM

We always stay at a place called Campers Paradise, they have efficiencies that are not the Taj Mahal but its convenient, and on the water. They have gas, a restaurant, and the docks are in a nice calm cove. Never made the trip to Kerr, have heard mixed stories. Are there any bars or restaurants on the water?

Walkin, there's nothing on Buggs except sandy beaches and very few people. I've been to SML a few times, and Buggs is completely different. Not very built up because they use it as a buffer lake for Gaston - water levels can vary by 30'!! But thee is agas and a few marinas if you need them.

You have to bring your own bars.....preferably the ones that float...:D

As Cig mentioned, the difference is Kerr does not have thousands of docks sticking out nor homes built all along the waterfront. In fact, except for the the scattered campgrounds here and there, it's totally pitch black at night on the water and you definitely need a strong spot to find your beach spot. That's the attraction. Pristineness, non-commercial, and lots of acreage to get lost on....intentionally or unintentionally....

Steve, you heading that way tomorrow or Thursday? I think my best shot would be late Thursday. I've gotta be back home late Sunday afternoon to pick the wife up at the airport 11pm. The other thing is, since I'm late deciding to go I've got to get a spot at the sight or sleep on the boat off the beach....

Walkin the Dog,

I will be around SML all weekend, let me know if you want to meet up. I usually spend most of my time arounds the Cliffs. My cousins are flying in and i may try to get some arial shots of coming down the lake.

Reck, I'm going down wed am. If I come across an extra site I'll let you know.

Reckless32 08-26-2003 11:56 PM

Thanks Cig, give me a ring and let me know the scoop once there...

Cignificant 08-27-2003 08:12 AM

Rick, if you don't mind, would you pick up a bushel of crabs? We bought a bushel of #2s at Dockside for $50 after the LCR and they were fantastic! If you can get the same deal we'll pay you back. Don't worry about it if it's a pain in the butt....
