drive impellor meltdown.
Dad thought running the boat off the hose will warm it up quicker when winterizing. I told him it takes 6 seconds dry to melt the impellor. He said that is a bunch of bull. So has anyone had experience running the boat off the hose? How long does it take to melt one?

All it takes is enough time to realize no water is coming out.It may take 5 secs or more for water to begin to come out normally , after that it doesn't take long.
My best one was when I had smoke coming off the pump . The hose was on...but not turned on
That was about 30 secs. and the pump was trash .I had to take the pieces of impeller out of the oil cooler
I keep spares handy too .

I started mine up once without a hose and it went within a few short seconds that was enough so don't even try it. And I have always had a spare once on my boat since.

The time ya got sorta depends on how wet things are when you start. If it's a dry startup after sitting all winter...well, ya got toast almost immediately. If you pulled the boat from the water on a Sat. and fired dry on Sun., then you might have 15 secs. before permanent damage at best. I hose test at home before going to the ramp and fire (2 secs.) at the ramp before dunking just to avoid possible in water embarrassment. --- Jer

Yeah, alpha drives will fry the impeller almost instantly. They are smaller than the block mounted impellers on Bravo drive boats NEVER run your boat without the hose on it!!!!

Do not buy just the impeller...buy the kit that has the new housing, plates etc......This should be a Maint item anyway...every year or so....WAY cheaper than frying an engine !!
