OT kinda...1998 5.7l Dually mods
Guys,
I test drove a 98 Silverado dually last weekend with 22k miles...has extended cab and 4 wheel drive. Everthing I have been looking for for nearly a year except it's got the 5.7 liter gas motor. I don't plan on doing any long hauls towing the Cafe Racer(maybe a trip to Chicago or FL)... Mostly weekend driving and small boat towing...
So what do ya'll think? Are there any performance mods? I saw Hypertech makes a chip and I can put exhaust on the truck, but what realistic gains can be expected?
any help is appreciated.
Sean

Not enough motor... Sorry bud, but it's true...
I have a '00 GMC Crew Dually 4x4, 454 with Banks PowerPack (Headers and all)
It tows my 28 Pantera very well, but I couldn't imagine doing it with less power. My truck just clicked over 55,000miles. It still looks new.
Want it? I'm selling to get a Duramax...
I can post pics if you like..
Oh, and the deal comes with a free boat ride if you come down to get it! 80 and sunny today!

FYI,
The Banks system on my truck really woke it up! The actual gain was about 100ft.lb and almost 100 hp.
So that's about 375HP, and 500ft lb.... I didn't even do the chip thing yet!
The small block could crank out 300hp if you gave it the real exhaust..

I agree, I think you are going to not have enough power. Maybe look at the truck st31 just listed.
You will save some gas driving the 350 as opposed to BBC in the short run (like when not towning), but towing that boat, with that age/size engine, not mileage, of motor, will probably run it into the ground pretty fast. Expect water pumps, transmission, oil pump, injectors, etc.
I towed my 26' 7000lb total package Sonic with a 1996 Tahoe, 350 Vortec, almost identical to what you are looking at. Yes, the truck and wheelbase were not enough truck, however, that motor was really strained too. It would not do over 72 on Interstate.

Buy a big block. I had a 2000 crew cab dually,454, 4x4, 4:56 locker. It towed a 12K boat 90+mph no problem. I lost that truck in a divorce. I now have an '01 with the 6.0L and 4:10's, much stronger than the 5.7, and it would only do 72mph with the same boat behind it.
I miss my 2000.
