Alright, here's why performance boats come back battered from Europe. Firstly, it's because we abuse them. We're used to heavy boats and diesels and when we're given lighter stuff with gas motors, it's party time. Being used to diesels, motors are run WOT all the time. Being used to surface drives or simple shaft drives, no consideration is given to outdrives. Everybody thinks they can take everything you throw at them. Just treating mechanics kindly is an alien concept. Secondly, it gets rough in the Med and we boat all the time. I know 6' and even 8' seas never stopped me from going out. It's not that we are tough guys but we do not have inland waterways and so many lakes so it's either 8' or nothing. We also have very few no-wake zones so motors rarely get a chance to warm up and cool down properly. Thirdly, we leave boats in marinas because you cannot trailer a 30' boat, let alone a 40'+. Roads are simply too twisty and narrow. Besides, space is limited and nobody has enough space to store a boat on his property. Think about trying to store a 40' in central Manhattan and you get the idea. Boat lifts do not exist which means our boats stay in water all the time, except maybe for 3 or 4 winter months when you dry store it because you know you won't use it. But even this is an exception rather than a rule. That means that drives fizz away pretty quickly and anything with open-circuit cooling is doomed within a year. Fresh water flushing of engines is unheard of. That's part of the winterizing procedure. So because we're used to gear which offers less performance but is way more solid, when we apply that behaviour to Cigs for example, they never last long. Also, the infrastructure is such that even if we wanted to take good care of our boats, it's largely impossible...
