Opinions on GM 2500HD with 6.0 gas...

When I was Sales Manager at the Chevy dealer, I ordered a 2500HD (2002) with the 8100/allision and 3.73 gears to see if it was any different than the 4.10's. I put approx 1700 miles on it.
Most of my driving was combo city /highway. Never actually got it out for a long highway trip. The truck never seemed to get over 11MPG, even driving like I had an egg under my foot! When I hooked the Formula to it, it pulled it with ease.
I also drove the 6.0L (leftover 2001) for approx 1500 miles. It was ok. No match for the 8.1. Fuel mileage if I recall correctly was approx 13MPG, same conditions. Never hooked the Formula to that truck.
The best Chevy/GMC was the 2001 3500HD with the 8100/Allison and 4.10's. Wow, that thing flew! I liked the gearing much better than the 3.73's! As I recall, that truck got approx 10.5, not much different. Most of my numbers corresponded to many of my customers testimonials.
I still think used diesel...
Just my opinions.
Good luck, sorry to be so long-winded

Who the F wants On Star anyway?
I've had to use On Star a number of times when the old lady locks the keys in the truck I think its awesome.
I've had both 6.0 and Dmax. Don't buy it because you think you make up the price difference in fuel economy.
It will take a lot of miles to make it up. I pulled a 27 Fountain with the 6.0 and got around 9mpg now I pull a 32 Fountain with the Dmax and get around 12 mpg pulling. But I love the Dmax and will probably always have a diesel from now on.

Around town I get between 11-12mpg. A lot/75% of the driving is highway or interstate.
The best mileage I have ever seen is like 14.2 mpg on the highway. Going 80mph it is only spinning 2400rpms.
Towing the Pantera, I usually get about 8.5mpg on the tow from here down to LOTO. I usually am towing in the 80mph range a slong as traffic permits. I have seen as high as 10mpg between fuel stops on the way down before.

Another thing to think about
I had a 1500 with the 5.3 in it. tore transmissions out of it. finally they sent a tech with me and the boat with a computer that showed transmission temp. on the highway no prob. up and down hills on the way to the lake, overheated the trans, causing them to burn up. the diesels torque keeps it from shifting up and down those hills.

Well, that sucks!!!! Glad I didnt buy that 2500, 6.0 ext cab short box 2 wheel drive truck. with the miles I put on, I would be filling up twice a week!!!!
I dont know where to steer ya on this one, you should be fine for the amount(distance) towing you do, with the 6.0, but I know you wont be happy with it, Getting the Duramax would be the schitt, but then ya gotta pay for it, and if you were to get the 8.1, you might as well keep what ya got?????
Depends what ya want, Dad has the identical truck to mine(2001 reg cab longbox) except his is a 2500HD, with the Duramax/Allison(this will most likely be my truck, dad changes vehicles on a yearly basis, cant decide between sportscars, and Trucks????), He got a SMMMOOOOOKKKIIINNG deal on it, because nobody wanted a used reg cab 2 wheel drive Diesel, the people that had Diesel money, all wanted the extended cab. I know you need the ext. cab, but just saying, you might find a sweet deal on a used one if your patient.
