First year for HP500/Bravo 1-XZ??
Does anyone know when the HP500/Bravo1-XZ combo first became available? I thought it was available for the 2002 model year. I'm looking at an unsold 2002 boat with a HP500 and it has a standard Bravo 1 not the XZ. I'm thinking the manufacturer screwed up and put the wrong drive on the boat, or was there an availability problem the first year? This is the original drive that came on the boat.

An '02 500 EFI power package should have the XZ. I have the "X" (which is the same top half as "xz", just with the improved DWP standard bravo lower) 0n my early '02 496 HO boat. Did you check numbers on the build sheet or other time-of-build references? Is this a small builder or large? Does it have the HP gimbal? This may be an engine and drive that were not originally packaged together by Merc, or an older model year (than the '02 boat) engine/drive package. This is worth looking into for bargaining (on price or drive) purposes!

Our 2002 Baja 36 Outlaw came standard with the 500 EFI/Bravo "XZ" package. The XR was available for an additional upgrade charge. This was the first year that I had heard of the XZ.

I would guess the dealer probably sold the xz or xr that was on it and put a std bravo one on the boat to save money, for every person that knows the xz should have been on there, there are probably 20 that don't. If you buy I would'nt do it unless he puts the right drive on, its a lot cheaper for you to do it now rather than later.

Hey Rick.
If you want to know what year and month that boat was built in, look at the last 4 digits in the SER# on the transom.
Example: IMV23012E102
The first 3 letters (IMV) designate the manufacturer
The next five (23012) the mfg uses to identify model (23)and production number (012) of the years or months production.
The last four tell the date of manufacture and the model year. The letter "E" represents the month of May.
A = Jan
B = FEB
C = March and so on.
The next number after the letter is the last digit in the year it was manufactured. In this case a 1 for 2001.
And the last two nubmers are the model year, 02.
So with this serial #, IMV23012E102, you have a 23' boat that was the 12th boat built, in the month of May 2001 and sold as a 2002 model.
Hope that helps a bit.
