Brian, after seeing this somewhere else, I also am concerned about the safety issue.

In the event of a catastrophe, or even a simple rear-ending, the only thing that is going to slow that block down is the dash.

I think it really would be wise to rent the U-Haul trailer.
I looked at the rates from Chesapeake to Binghampton, and the below rates are for a one way rental, from VA to NY.

If you rent a trailer local, and drag it all the way to VA and back, you can get them for about $10 bucks a day, you just have to convince them to let you have it for that long. We just rented a 5x8 U-Haul trailer from Chicago to DC, and dragged a piano back in it, over the holidays. It worked out great, and you can get cheap insurance on the trailer AND its contents from U-Haul in the event of an accident. Its about $20 bucks.

I am sure we can help you get it manuevered when in Richmond around the parking garage or something, and when you get home, you should just be able to slide the engine out, gently, with some friends, while on the crate, by tilting the trailer up. This is exactly what we did with the piano.
