Johnson Controls, Holland (automotive) announces layoffs today

Announced today at a full plant update:

Anyone who was hired after June 2, 2002, their job is in jeopardy as of May 31st. This amounts to several hundred people in my plant (the largest plant in the company, about 900 employees total). These people are mostly young people, or older people working 2nd or 3rd shift who found employment with us after their jobs were eliminated elsewhere. I really feel for these people. I've been with the company over 10 years, and have had perfect evaluations for many years, so I'm in no jeopardy. But I know a lot of people who are not sleeping well tonight.

Worst part of it is, most of the hot chicks work 2nd and 3rd shift!! It's just not fair!!!

We are told that this stems from some business we are losing with GM and Daimler/Chrysler in our door panals business (or not getting the renewed contracts on). It's not even based on the current economic state we are in. Simply losing some business we were counting on. The plant I work in is the worlds largest producer of sun visors. Chances are you have our visors in your car or truck. This is the business Prince Corporation got on the automotive map with nearly 35 years ago. JCI bought Prince about 6+ years ago, mainly to aquire our engineering expertees and our visor business. The visor plant is the only plant in the company with more new business coming in than we can handle right now, so people being layed off at our other plants with more seniority than people in our plant are going to be getting those jobs. Fair? Maybe, but I don't like it anyway. Quality will suffer, moral will suffer, and, in my opinion, our business as a whole will suffer. Nobody likes layoffs.

Johnson Controls has a big group here, they're industrial control stuff(boilers, HVAC etc.)

So who got the contract? Lear?

I work for a company that provides indirect materials purchasing services to JCI. The Mapelwood faccility in Holland is one of our bigest users. I also provide materials for plants in Gainesville, Athens, Cadiz, Plymouth, Lexington, Oberlin, the list goes on. Sorry to hear about the situation, but that's biz I guess.

Yep.... I'll bet it's going offshore... or going to Mexico....
