You get what you pay for. Decent parts to build a 600+" engine cost more than that.
Dart or Merlin Block: 2,000.00
ARP fasteners: 200.00
Callies Crank 900.00
Oliver forged rods 885.00
JE pistons 700.00
Balancer 279.00
Neutral flywheel 150.00
Rings 200.00
Bearings 165.00
Camshaft 350.00
timing set 100.00
lifters 450.00
Pushrods 125.00
Cylinder heads 2000.00
Head bolts 200.00
Roller rockers 210.00
head gaskets 75.00
misc parts 100.00
machine work 750.00
$9839.00
This doesn't include any assembly. Keep in mind that 700 HP is not easily achieved, and for reliability the engine must have good parts and be meticulously assembled.

I agree that a relibale 700 plus HP is tough to achieve unless it is done right. But you should be able to get it out of a 572 ci. Question is, what kind of parts are they actually using and how can they do it so cheap??

Even if they get a discount on the parts for large quantity, they have to be cutting some corner to get the price so low. I always tell my customers to cut corners on the paint, or the stereo, or the upholstery, but don't short on the engine.

Fred,
Those prices were off the top of my head. I just tried to PM you, your box is full. Get me a list of all the parts you have for sale. I can probably move them all for you. I've got tons of guys looking for parts right now.

The Merlins were built by Merlin. The blocks, heads and several other parts were manufactured in house. The engines were orginally introduced by Merlin as drag race engines. They then offered a marine version which had several problems and was soon after discontinued. Teague now is selling them, but I haven't heard much about them.
Scat cranks don't have the best reputation.
Lunati, Callies, Kryptonite, Howards, etc. are all good. Be sure they were built in USA, and not imported from China.

For years we only used Merlin, but now it seems the Dart blocks are better quality. They now offer billet caps too. Feel free to call or email me with any questions. We've also posted a tech forum on our website which my techs will be monitoring. Unlike some shops, you don't have to buy anything to get a question answered.

We build engines in all price ranges, 500HP and up. We work individually with each customer to tailor a package that fits their budget and exceeds their expectations, but we don't ever cut quality or structural integrity. We also don't sell or advertise 10K long blocks to customers as they will end up with many headaches trying to outfit them on a budget. I agree that everyone should shop within their budget, and at the end of the day , everyone needs to remember that this is a hobby, and should be fun, no headaches or worries. You guys spend enough time doing that during the week.
