Believe half of what you see, and nothing of what you hear.

kinda silly how they burrie dit. I figiured maybe they woudl biuld some kind of bunker underground or at elast some kinda of structure to keep from dumpign sand directly on it.....

you know how many junk planes we bury in the desert at area 51?... lots, junk em and bury em

Don99 01-29-2004 09:18 PM

HO it has to to be true I read it on the internet

yeah, don't knock the soviet airframes.
Made tough to take off and land in pastures.
Aerodynamically more stable and able to sustain higher g-loadings than our planes - ours have computers to correct their unstable designs while theirs still turn and maneuver while remaining stable.

Dogfighting days are over, but our planes electronically limit g-forces. Theirs can momentarily pull way more than where our limits are set.

As was mentioned, air show footage will show somepretty incredible things fro the soviet planes.

The Foxbat, from what I remember, was a motor-eater. While the blackbird's hybrid turbo-ramjets had a long service life at insane cruising speeds, the Foxbat motors had ONE HARD RUN in them before they were toast. High speed cruise, yes, but full military power? Ate em up.

Course this is just drivel from post cold war reading. I ain't never driven one.

Isn't that Jimmy Hoffa behind that MIG 25 to the left?

GLH 01-30-2004 07:30 AM

Merlin couldn't make that POS fly after treating a plane like that.

Never underestimate Russian technology. When we were building the SR 71, the U.S. Gov`t set up a bogus company to buy titanium from them for the project.

That plane is a high speed flying tank, it's built of nickel steel and has supersonic G-loading that our stuff doesn't match. As far as it eating engines, that was because the turbines started to act like a ram jet and the air flow not fuel flow regulated their speed and could easily hit 120% even still a good pilot could control that to an extent. Even with that draw back it fly's at Mach 2.8 sustained, easily outrunning what we had to offer, and it was clocked at Mach 3.2 by the Isralies evading an F-4. It may be old but that bugger is still impressive.
